Area Finals - Darlington.
The areas at Darlington proved one of the stiffest challenges the band has ever undertaken in the top section. We practiced at length to play the very difficult piece. We were happy with our performance, but despite all our efforts, we were placed eighth out of eight bands. There was a full band for the Tuesday practice a day or two later with only a few glum faces. We are very proud to have played such a difficult piece at the finals and we gained an emmence amount of experience.Himmighausen trip to Kirkby 2011
Our German friends from Himmighausen visited over the weekend of 29th July 2011. Their band played wonderfully and all our band were very impressed.
We all went to Whitby for fish and chips on Saturday morning. Fish and chips seemed OK for them, but mushy peas received a less enthusiastic welcome. After a dash back to Kirkby, we set off for Helmsley to share the stage at a concert for the prestigious RYEDALE FESTIVAL at Duncombe House. That night at the Memorial Hall, Kirkby we were all treated to a session from Kirkby's own SOUL BAND.
After the first sober up, football at the football field on Sunday morning was just the way to start the day. Kirkby showed their generosity by letting Himmighausen thrash them, in true England - Germany tradition. A march round the town in the afternoon finished at the band room, where the Kirkby Junior Band gave a confident and enjoyable performance.
Time for a quick nap, before the concert from both bands at the Memorial Hall . Wonderful gifts were exchanged and a pledge to get together in the future was expressed. A tearful goodbye on Monday morning left us with a feeling that in spite of a lot of hard work from both Himmighausen and Kirkby, the weekend had been a great success and it was especially cheering to see the young members of both bands have such a great time. The older members will take longer to get over it, but enjoyed it just as much. Thank's to all the people who gave their free time in both Himmighausen and Kirkby to make the weekend so enjoyable. Stockton on Forest Concert
This was the first time the band has played at Stockton on Forest Village Hall. We enjoyed playing to a full hall and hope you all enjoyed the programme as much as we enjoyed playing it. Special thank's to all who helped and thank's to the Dean family, of DEAN'S GARDEN CENTRE for their support..![]()

Catherine BeckettKirkbymoorside, or Kirby as it is known locally, is situated at the southern foothills of the North Yorks Moors.
It is 7 miles from Pickering and 6 miles from Helmsley.A Brief History of the band. .
The first recorded reference to Kirkbymoorside Band was in the parish records of 1815. It has been a public subscription band from that time and in 1976 became a registered charity [Reg charity number 505458]. In 1815 £22.18s.00p was spent on instruments including a Serpent. This must make kirkby band one of the oldest bands in the country. The minutes book has been found recently from 1890, so more is known of the last 100 years than the first 80. The bands first contest win was the Kirkbymoorside poultry and industrial show contest of 1886. They won playing 'Norma' and 'William Tell'. At that time the band was a 'temperance band', don't worry it's no such thing now, and it cost the equivalent of £50.00 per year to join.
In 1965 the band took 3rd place playing in the 4th section at the National Finals, and repeated the area win in 1971 when promotion to the 3rd section followed. In 1980 the band was promoted to the 2nd section and won the Northern Area Contest by a clear 5 points. 1n 1981 the band went to London and were promoted to the Championship Section all in the same year . 1984 and 1986 saw the band win the Inter Counties Radio Brass Band Contest and were proclaimed outright champions. In 1989 the band was back in the 2nd section but following their success they were back in the championship section in 1991.
The band has a very healthy junior band which supplies a constant stream of players for the senior band. Leslie Maw 'BEM' retired after 36 years as band master in 1988. Leslie's contribution to the band can not be calculated and the band and the village holds him a position of high esteem. He is still involved with the band and his advice and wisdom is greatly appreciated. It was particularly fitting that he was awarded the British Empire Medal on his retirement.
The band has always been a subscription band and rely on the generosity of the public for support. If you would like to help by donating a gift of money to the band, please ring the secretary Alan Martin and ask him where to send the money. Mention you saw the request on the WEB.

The Band Room
The band room was built in 1976 on land kindly donated by James Holt who lives in Kirby. It is a purpose built building and is used for all band activities including practice which is two or three times a week. The band room is situated in Manor vale at the top of the village. The band room is also used for fund raising events such as, domino drives usually held on Saturday nights through the year. A new extension has been built for storage and general duties.Himmighausen Band
From a prestige booking in April 1982 to play in the North Sea Ferries Terminal Building in Europort, Rotterdam came a request to host a German Band for a weekend early in 1983. This led to numerous friendships springing up between the two communities and a return visit to Germany by the Band in the October if the same year. Apart from the numerous private visits - both ways - the Himmighausen Blaskapelle visited Kirkbymoorside for a week in the summer of 1986 and the Band made a further visit in the summer of 1989 - the host Bandmaster writing a special piece for the occasion which intertwined 'On Ilkley Moor B'aht 'At' with the 'Lipper Detmold' a comparable local dirty. We have been visiting them as they have us since 1983 and we take it in turns to visit every three or four years.Friends of Kirkbymoorside Town Brass Band
