Ryedale's Leading Chamber Choir
Since Chanticleer was founded in 1975 with 16 members, the Singers have developed into a chamber choir of some 34 voices, attracting able singers from near and far. Though most of the members live in the Malton and Pickering area, others come from York, Scarborough, Robin Hoods Bay and outlying villages - a catchment area spanning some 50 milesMost of the members are amateur musicians, though some are professionals. They have in common a love of singing and a taste for a wide range of music. Though concentrating mainly on classical works, the Singers also enjoy a much lighter repertoire. Whatever is sung, there is an emphasis on quality of performance.
Most of our concerts are held in Ryedale and in the York area, where we sometimes combine with other choirs in the performance of major works. We also take our music-making to outlying villages, where we draw upon audiences who welcome us to their own church or village hall. Additionally we sometimes go much further afield, including France and the Netherlands. We are also called upon from time to time to participate in television and radio broadcasts.
