TABLE TENNIS

Table tennis is probably the world's largest participation sport with over 35 million people playing the game worldwide. You need a quick eye to see what is going on, but you should be able to catch most of it as the players thump a celluloid ball at nearly 100mph in one of the fastest and most enthralling sports of the Games.

Table tennis is as much about mental ability as being able to play the big shots staring out opponents and deliberately slowing the game down are commonplace, although players are expected to adhere to a strict code of conduct. Men and women will play in both singles and doubles during the Olympics, with a match being decided over the best of five games. The top 16 singles players are automatically seeded to the main draw, which is another example of a single-elimination tournament.
