We are the MS Society

The MS Society is a community of people that pool their experience, expertise and voices to drive change and help people live more positively with MS. By coming together, we can provide care, share support, collectively campaign and commission life-changing research – all of which help us face the future with more confidence.

What is MS

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition of the central nervous system. In MS, the body’s immune system, attacks the nerves in the brain and spinal cord by mistake. The coating around nerve fibres (called myelin) is damaged. We don’t know the cause and we haven’t yet found a cure, but research is progressing fast.

What can Ryedale MS Group do for you?

One of the things that people affected by MS want most is accurate and up to date information about the disease itself, about living with it and about what help is available.
We can provide you with most of this information; we have leaflets about all kinds of issues affecting people with MS, ranging from symptom management to employment issues. Our newsletter regularly contains articles about the latest in MS research and of course you can talk to other people who know what it’s like living with MS.

Someone to talk to

We organise a variety of get-togethers and activities where people can chat about MS but talk about much more. We also offer friendly support and advice about living with MS and can help put you in touch with other local services. Call us on 07521 084923 or email Ryedale@mssociety.org.uk, you can also call the Society’s free national helpline between 9am-7pm on 0808 800 8000.

Financial support

We may be able to provide you with small grants for short breaks, equipment or adaptations. If you are interested in applying for a grant, please contact us on 07521 084923 or email Ryedale@mssociety.org.uk. All applications are dealt with in confidence.

Regular newsletters

Our quarterly group newsletter aims to keep you up to date with services, events and activities as well as national news. As a member you will also receive MS Matters, the Society’s bi-monthly magazine featuring interesting articles and interviews.

Social activities

There are various social groups that meet up for a chat or something to eat at different times and places. There are also occasional group outings and celebrations. We hope they are fun but also provide a source of informal information and support.

Why not volunteer?

There are plenty of opportunities for volunteering within the Ryedale MS Group, ranging from fundraising to support. You may want to get involved helping to run the group, or by giving assistance on social outings.

We provide support to all our volunteers, as well as induction into the work of the society and the opportunity to attend regional training days.
We are entirely funded by our own fundraising efforts, as we do not receive any public funding.

Join us

It costs just £5 per year to join the MS Society and become part of the group. We try and do a lot but you can be involved as much or as little as you like. It really will help you stay well informed. You can join online at Join the MS Society
